Jean Paul Gaultier in a full circle moment as he announces Y/project’s Glenn Marten as the next and newest designer-in-residence.
For SS22 Glenn Marten will be taking over the collection as couture designer, “It remains to be seen how the designer will interpret the iconic label, but from his tenure at Y/Project we know that Martens has an affinity for unique silhouettes and playful designs – something we're definitely expecting from the JPG collaboration.” - Highsnobiety
This doesn’t come as a surprise since Marten has previously worked with AND worked for Gaultier as a junior designer, before he joined Y/Project in 2013 and 10 years later, they’ll be reunited again.
Marten speaks with Vogue and says: “We’ve done gowns for Y/Project, but never sold one of them, they were show pieces,” Martens said, laughing. “But working on couture...it’s a chance to work with les petites mains, and spend time and really go deeply into the making of a dress. Couture is an absurd fairy tale,” he continued, “but it is like art: we cling onto it, and it makes us dream. And couture can do the same thing.”
“With Gaultier, I want to celebrate my love for movement and versatility, but using more architecturally structured silhouettes.” In this collaborative effort Martens will experiment with materials, embroideries, volumes and his expertise of creating garments. - Forbes
He will show his vision of Gaultier’s haute couture, which has always been an incredible and energetic fusion of pop culture and time honoured artisanal craft, not to mention the visionary brilliance of JPG himself, in January 2022. - Vogue
